Amazona kawalli
Species Authority: The species authority, or the name(s) of scientist(s) or person(s) who first described Amazona kawalli is Grantsau & Camargo, 1989 (IUCN Red List). Country Distribution: Amazona kawalli is found in the following countries:
Biome(s)/Ecosystem(s): IUCN lists the following as biomes for Amazona kawalli: Terrestrial (IUCN Red List). Major Habitat(s): 1.6 Forest - Subtropical/Tropical Moist (IUCN Red List). Range: Amazona kawalli was only recently discovered, and appears to be confined to the Amazon basin of Brazil in Amazonas and Par. However, a previously misidentified specimen labelled Colombia exists, suggesting that the species may be overlooked and have a wider distribution than is reported (Juniper and Parr 1998). The species inhabits lowland rainforest, with a preference for igap (permanently flooded forest) and river edge forest. It nests in cavities of trees in flooded forest, and is known to feed on tree seeds and palm fruits. A captive bird found on the edge of Amazonas National Park suggests its presence there (del Hoyo et al. 1997). There appear to be few immediate threats to this species, and it has a large range, with an estimated global Extent of Occurrence of 720,000 km. The global population size has not been quantified, but the species is not believed to approach the thresholds for the population size criterion of the IUCN Red List (i.e. less than 10,000 mature individuals in conjunction with appropriate decline rates and subpopulation qualifiers). Global population trends have not been quantified, but the species is not believed to approach the thresholds for the population decline criterion of the IUCN Red List (i.e. declining more than 30% in ten years or three generations). For these reasons, the species is evaluated as Least Concern. CITES Appendix II. (IUCN Red List). CONSERVATION STATUS Red List Category & Criteria: Amazona kawalli is listed as LC ver 3.1 (2001) (IUCN Red List). Year Assessed: Amazona kawalli's status was assessed in 2004 (IUCN Red List). Assessor: Amazona kawalli's Red List status was evaluated by BirdLife International (IUCN Red List). Red List Evaluator: The Red List Evaluator for Amazona kawalli is listed by IUCN as Ekstrom, J. & Butchart, S. (BirdLife International Red List Authority) (IUCN Red List).
