Amazona ventralis

Amazona ventralis is a chordate, or more specifically a bird, in the Psittacidae family.

Amazona ventralis is commonly known (its common name) as the Hispaniolan Parrot in English. In French (Français), Amazona ventralis is commonly known as the Amazone D'hispaniola or Amazone De San Domingo. In Spanish (Español), Amazona ventralis is commonly known as the Amazona De La Española or Cotorra or Loro De Hispaniola.

Amazona ventralis is classified as vulnerable by the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species, the world's most comprehensive inventory of the global conservation status of plant and animal species maintained by the International Union for Conservation of Nature and Natural Resources. Amazona ventralis's population trend was decreasing at last assessment, meaning its numbers are declining in the wild.

Species Authority: The species authority, or the name(s) of scientist(s) or person(s) who first described Amazona ventralis is (Mller, 1776) (IUCN Red List).

Country Distribution: Amazona ventralis is found in the following countries:
Dominican Republic, Haiti, Puerto Rico [int], Virgin Islands, U.S. [int]
(IUCN Red List).

Biome(s)/Ecosystem(s): IUCN lists the following as biomes for Amazona ventralis: Terrestrial (IUCN Red List).

Major Habitat(s): 1.5 Forest - Subtropical/Tropical Dry
1.6 Forest - Subtropical/Tropical Moist
1.9 Forest - Subtropical/Tropical Moist Montane
11.3 Artificial/Terrestrial - Plantations (IUCN Red List).

Range: Amazona ventralis is endemic to Hispaniola (Haiti and the Dominican Republic) and associated islands of Grande Cayemite, Gonve, Beata and Saona1. Introduced populations are established in Puerto Rico (to USA), and St Croix and St Thomas in the Virgin Islands (to USA)1. It was common on Hispaniola, but declined seriously during the 20th century. By the 1930s, it was mainly restricted to the interior mountains, where it remains locally common in suitable habitat, particularly within several major forest reserves4,5. Elsewhere, it is now uncommon, rare or absent4. The introduced population in Puerto Rico numbers several hundred and is apparently increasing4. (IUCN Red List).

CONSERVATION STATUS

Red List Category & Criteria: Amazona ventralis is listed as VU A2bcd    ver 3.1 (2001) (IUCN Red List).

Year Assessed: Amazona ventralis's status was assessed in 2004 (IUCN Red List).

Assessor: Amazona ventralis's Red List status was evaluated by BirdLife International (IUCN Red List).

Red List Evaluator: The Red List Evaluator for Amazona ventralis is listed by IUCN as Capper, D., Wege, D. & Benstead, P. (BirdLife International Red List Authority) (IUCN Red List).

Red List Rational / Justification : Amazona ventralis is listed by IUCN for the following: This species is considered Vulnerable because anecdotal evidence suggests that there has been a rapid population reduction. The size of the population and the exact extent of the decline are unclear, and clarification may lead to the species being reclassified as Near Threatened. (IUCN Red List).

Threats: 1.1.1.2 (Wikipedia).

Red List History: Amazona ventralis was listed on the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species in 1988 (IUCN Red List).
