Amazona versicolor

Amazona versicolor is a chordate, or more specifically a bird, in the Psittacidae family.

Amazona versicolor is commonly known (its common name) as the St Lucia Parrot in English. In French (Français), Amazona versicolor is commonly known as the Amazone De Sainte-Lucie or Amazone Versicolore. In Spanish (Español), Amazona versicolor is commonly known as the Amazona De Santa Lucía.

Amazona versicolor is classified as vulnerable by the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species, the world's most comprehensive inventory of the global conservation status of plant and animal species maintained by the International Union for Conservation of Nature and Natural Resources. Amazona versicolor's population trend was increasing at last assessment, meaning its numbers are climbing in the wild.

Species Authority: The species authority, or the name(s) of scientist(s) or person(s) who first described Amazona versicolor is (Mller, 1776) (IUCN Red List).

Country Distribution: Amazona versicolor is found in the following countries:
    Saint Lucia
(IUCN Red List).

Biome(s)/Ecosystem(s): IUCN lists the following as biomes for Amazona versicolor: Terrestrial (IUCN Red List).

Major Habitat(s): 1.9 Forest - Subtropical/Tropical Moist Montane (IUCN Red List).

Range: Amazona versicolor occurs in the central-southern mountains of St Lucia. In 1950, there were 295 km of available habitat, but this has been reduced rapidly since the mid-1970s. There have been considerable population declines, but these are being reversed by concerted conservation action. Surveys in 1996 estimated the wild population at c.350-500 individuals4, and noted some range expansion3. (IUCN Red List).

CONSERVATION STATUS

Red List Category & Criteria: Amazona versicolor is listed as VU D1+2    ver 3.1 (2001) (IUCN Red List).

Year Assessed: Amazona versicolor's status was assessed in 2004 (IUCN Red List).

Assessor: Amazona versicolor's Red List status was evaluated by BirdLife International (IUCN Red List).

Red List Evaluator: The Red List Evaluator for Amazona versicolor is listed by IUCN as Capper, D., Wege, D. & Benstead, P. (BirdLife International Red List Authority) (IUCN Red List).

Red List Rational / Justification : Amazona versicolor is listed by IUCN for the following: Conservation action may have saved this species from extinction. Numbers are now increasing and there is some evidence of a small range expansion. However, the area of apparently suitable (but unoccupied) habitat may be decreasing. If this begins to affect occupied habitat, the species will immediately qualify as Endangered. At present, its small population size and small range on a single island qualify it as Vulnerable. (IUCN Red List).

Threats: 1.3.3.2 (Wikipedia).

Red List History: Amazona versicolor was listed on the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species in 1988 (IUCN Red List).
