Amazona vinacea
Species Authority: The species authority, or the name(s) of scientist(s) or person(s) who first described Amazona vinacea is (Kuhl, 1820) (IUCN Red List). Country Distribution: Amazona vinacea is found in the following countries:
Biome(s)/Ecosystem(s): IUCN lists the following as biomes for Amazona vinacea: Terrestrial (IUCN Red List). Major Habitat(s): 1.6 Forest - Subtropical/Tropical Moist 1.9 Forest - Subtropical/Tropical Moist Montane 11.3 Artificial/Terrestrial - Plantations (IUCN Red List). Range: Amazona vinacea has become rare throughout its extensive range. In the early 1980s, Paraguay was considered the global stronghold, but all remaining subpopulations in Canindey and Alto Paran number fewer than c.80 birds7,10. There are very few recent records from Caazap and Concepcin, and it has been extirpated in Amambay, Caaguaz, Itapa and Guair. It is perhaps most common in Rio Grande do Sul, Santa Catarina and Paran (several populations of more than 100 birds), south Brazil, and low numbers persist in Minas Gerais and So Paulo. It was possibly never common, and must be close to extinction in Bahia, Esprito Santo and Rio de Janiero. In Argentina, two populations remain in Misiones, on the Alto Piray Min river to San Pedro and around Campo Viera1. (IUCN Red List). CONSERVATION STATUS Red List Category & Criteria: Amazona vinacea is listed as VU A2cd+3cd; C2a(i) ver 3.1 (2001) (IUCN Red List). Year Assessed: Amazona vinacea's status was assessed in 2004 (IUCN Red List). Assessor: Amazona vinacea's Red List status was evaluated by BirdLife International (IUCN Red List). Red List Evaluator: The Red List Evaluator for Amazona vinacea is listed by IUCN as Capper, D., Wege, D., Benstead, P. & Butchart, S. (BirdLife International Red List Authority) (IUCN Red List). Red List Rational / Justification : Amazona vinacea is listed by IUCN for the following: This species has been downlisted to Vulnerable because new information suggests that its population is larger than previously estimated. Significant populations remain in southern Brazil, despite range contraction in the northern part of the range, and hence the total population is estimated to be larger than previously, although still small. Extensive habitat loss and fragmentation, compounded by trade, have rapidly reduced numbers of this species, and these rapid declines are projected to continue. (IUCN Red List). Threats: 1.1.1.2 (Wikipedia). Red List History: Amazona vinacea was listed on the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species in 1988 (IUCN Red List).
