Oreomystis bairdi

Oreomystis bairdi is a chordate, or more specifically a bird, in the Fringillidae family.

Oreomystis bairdi is commonly known (its common name) as the 'Akikiki in English.

Oreomystis bairdi is classified as critically endangered by the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species, the world's most comprehensive inventory of the global conservation status of plant and animal species maintained by the International Union for Conservation of Nature and Natural Resources. Oreomystis bairdi's population trend was decreasing at last assessment, meaning its numbers are declining in the wild.

Species Authority: The species authority, or the name(s) of scientist(s) or person(s) who first described Oreomystis bairdi is (Stejneger, 1887) (IUCN Red List).

Country Distribution: Oreomystis bairdi is found in the following countries:
    United States (Hawaiian Is.)
(IUCN Red List).

Biome(s)/Ecosystem(s): IUCN lists the following as biomes for Oreomystis bairdi: Terrestrial (IUCN Red List).

Major Habitat(s): 1.9 Forest - Subtropical/Tropical Moist Montane (IUCN Red List).

Range: Oreomystis bairdi was common and widely distributed in the 1890s on Kaua`i in the Hawaiian Islands (USA). During 1968-1973, the total population was estimated at 6,832 ( 966 standard error), when it was recorded on the Laau ridge and was fairly widespread in Koke'e8. Since then, it has declined in and retreated from the Koke`e region and the fringes of the Alaka`i region and is now uncommon to rare in Alaka`i4,5,6. Recent, unpublished survey data indicate dramatic declines (85-89% since 1968-1973). In 1992, Hurricane Iniki devastated forests throughout Kaua`i, and all bird populations on the island appeared to have been drastically reduced4,5, although some have since recovered. The current estimated total population is 1,472 birds9. (IUCN Red List).

CONSERVATION STATUS

Red List Category & Criteria: Oreomystis bairdi is listed as CR B1ab(i,ii,iii,v)    ver 3.1 (2001) (IUCN Red List).

Year Assessed: Oreomystis bairdi's status was assessed in 2004 (IUCN Red List).

Assessor: Oreomystis bairdi's Red List status was evaluated by BirdLife International (IUCN Red List).

Red List Evaluator: The Red List Evaluator for Oreomystis bairdi is listed by IUCN as Stattersfield, A., Benstead, P. & Stuart, T. (BirdLife International Red List Authority) (IUCN Red List).

Red List Rational / Justification : Oreomystis bairdi is listed by IUCN for the following: This species qualifies as Critically Endangered because it has an extremely small declining range, confined to one upland area where it is at risk from the effects hurricanes and exotic taxa including predators and disease. Its conservation status appears to be getting worse. (IUCN Red List).

Red List History: Oreomystis bairdi was listed on the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species in 1988 (IUCN Red List).
